You know summer’s on the way out when Bottle & Cork closes its doors. The party comes to an end on September 18.
Rock and Roll All Night
Don’t let the fact that the Bottle & Cork has been around for more than 70 years keep you from carousing there – it’s got the best musical acts for miles around. It’s also got the stickiest floors, longest bathroom lines, most dangerous elbows, and fewest chairs.
A thirty-something crowd of summer beach house renters packs the bigger-than-it-looks indoor/outdoor venue for canned beers ($4), shooters and whatever’s in season, and the stage rocks with semi-famous and soon-to-be famous musicians. Dave Matthews, Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, Cyndi Lauper, Robert Palmer, Blondie, Ziggy Marley, Train, and Dwight Yoakam have played here (presumably before they ascended to the musical stratosphere).
The Saturday Jam Sessions are locally famous. And when you hear God Bless America wafting through the thinning crowd, you’ll know you’ve stayed too long.
Must be 21 to enter. (You don’t want the kids to see this.)
See the concert schedule and buy tickets online at tickets.deweybeachlife.com or charge by phone with no surcharge at 302-227-3888.

Everyone loves At Melissa’s. And in September you can love At Melissa’s for less. WAY less.
Here’s the SWAG: During September, stay three nights and get one for free. Just tell them Rehoboth in My Pocket sent you. (Try it in a whisper with a foreign accent, just for fun.)
Washingtonian magazine named this charming 6-room B&B one of 50 great places to stay, and nothing’s changed since then. The 100-year-old cottage is a little creakier, and the warm wood floors a little more deeply worn, and all that adds up to: home.
If you had a home at the beach, that is.
And an interior designer who had spot-on taste for evoking the quintessential beach house.
Free WiFi! Children warmly welcomed.

How often do you get to celebrate a major success in your own backyard? The successful end to a project on which hundreds have toiled for more than a decade? And best of all, the party’s on a big boat! (“Ship!” yell the exasperated men.)
Pardon the blatant stealing of information below from the Lightship Overfalls website – they know the story better than I do, and they should do the honors…
We’ve come a long way together and WE’VE MADE IT!
[The Lightship Overfalls] site tells the story of the eleven year project to save and preserve one of America’s maritime treasures. It’s a story of tens of thousands of volunteer hours of dirty work bringing one of the few remaining lightships back from the brink of ruin and all of the behind the scenes tasks that made it a reality. It’s a story of community support that maintained the momentum when any rational person would have thrown in the towel. And, it’s how this infectious community support spread farther afield making raising the $1.2 million necessary to complete the project possible.
Please join the party on September 10th to celebrate and thank the thousands who helped accomplish the goal to save the Lightship Overfalls and make her long-term preservation possible.
Take Route One North. After you pass the Midway Shopping Center and movie theatres, bear right onto Route 9 (Road 268) towards Lewes/Cape Henlopen State Park. At the lighthouse replica, bear to the left and follow King’s Highway into Lewes. At the stop sign, turn right onto Savannah Road then turn left at the traffic light onto Front Street. The lightship is on the right hand side, just after the tennis courts. Free Parking is available in front of the lightship.

We love hearing from you about the Rehoboth in My Pocket iPhone app. Is it giving you what you need for a complete travel experience to Rehoboth Beach? Let us know. You can now comment directly through the app itself, too. Here’s a comment we just received.
“I have been coming to RB for over 40yrs and twice a year for the past 10. This app is a wonderful way to keep me close to a place dear to my heart. Thank you for that. Hope there will be swags for Sept! Will be down soon. Pics of the boardwalk would be a great addition!”

If it’s Friday, it must be No iPhone Friday, ‘cuz there are still one or two folks out there without. And this free content’s for you…compliments of Rehoboth in My Pocket.
Why Jungle Jim’s? Look at the calendar. And weep. There’s not much left…not much left at all….
Jungle Jim’s Adventure World
No Running, No Smoking, No Gum. Them’s the rules. Beyond that, kids are free to go nuts at Jungle Jim’s Adventure World.
There’s plenty to keep a kid occupied for a day or two, all squeezed into a compact park just off Route 1 at the turn-off for Rehoboth Avenue.
Water park, go-karts, mini-golf, rock climbing, bumper boats, batting cages. The only thing missing is the baby sitter.
The go-karts are the star of the show, with five tracks featuring enclosed karts, open karts, electric karts for the little ones, plus double karts so parents can ride with their kids.
The bumper boat pond has boats that squirt (as in water pistols), and the water park has all the cool stuff – giant slides, wave pool, lazy river.
There’s a snack bar, too.
All-day water park pass $29, or $19 for kids under 42”. (After 3:00 the price drops to $20, or $14 for the little guys.)

I work hard to make No iPhone Friday relevant. I don’t just pick some random listing from our Rehoboth in My Pocket iPhone App and toss it out there, untethered and pointless. I mean, I work at it, I sweat, I give it my all! And may I just say that all the effort is paying off, cuz I am looking damn good.
You can look good, too. But the heat this summer has been murder, and your morning jog has probably taken a few impetuous detours to The Ice Cream Store (mmmm…..bacon…..).
So, exercise indoors. Each of the gyms below is a nice, safe, bacon-free zone.
PS – Have you picked up that iPhone yet? You could get all this free No iPhone Friday content for just $3.99. Score!

It’s time for a little diversion. Rehoboth is not all beaches, Grottos, and guys in tight shirts, after all.
It’s also – who knew? – a kayak kinda place. So here’s our gift to you, this ”No iPhone Friday“ - for those hankering for a peek inside our Rehoboth in My Pocket iPhone app/travel guide. We always like to give you a little something for free.
Who knew? Delaware Today’s 2009 “Best of Delaware” called the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal the “Best Undiscovered Secret” in downstate Delaware.
You remember the canal? That little ribbon of water you drive over as you head into downtown? Well, apparently it’s a great kayaking spot. Boosters call it peaceful, unique, and a total getaway.
You can rent kayaks on the Lewes side of the canal, at Quest Fitness and Kayaks (17252 N.Village Main Blvd, Lewes, 302-644-7020).
Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes also has kayaks for rent daily during the summer and on weekends in May and September.
Delaware Seashore State Park runs 90-minute (9:30 – 11:00 am) guided kayak trips along marsh creeks on the east side of Rehoboth Bay. Paddlers must be at least 13 years old, and be prepared to get wet in the sit-on-top kayaks.
Trips are limited to nine participants, and cost $30 per person. Along the way you will see Osprey platforms, nesting Laughing Gulls, herons and egrets, terrapins and other marine life. Pre-register by calling 301-227-6991.
Boat rental hours:
Memorial Day through Labor Day
Wednesday – Friday: 10 am-4 pm
Saturdays and Sundays 9 am-6 pm
Closed October through April
Keep your hands inside the boat. You never know what lurks way down deep. Mwaahahaha.

Taking a break from our regular progamming for a moment to say OMG and congratulations to my husband and parter Rick Collier for his awesome shot of the Historic Long Branch Hot Air Balloon Wine and Music Festival, on the August cover of Washingtonian magazine!
That shot was captured on a cold, very early morning out near Winchester, Virginia two Octobers ago, and I drank lots of hot chocolate waiting for Rick to stop running around like some obsessed madman so we could go back to our cozy B&B, the Old Waterstreet Inn, and have our breakfast.
Who knew he’d captured a cover?
It’s October 15, 16 and 17 this year, but make your reservations now – all the nearby inns always sell out. And be sure to get there for the Glow on Friday night – balloons illluminated against the darkening sky.
Bring your camera. You never know what might happen.

One of the neat features of the Rehoboth in My Pocket iPhone app is that you can comment on it – from within it! So, every once in a while, we’ll get an email that says “A customer has commented from your app!” Those are always good for a little stomach flutter, as we brace for the constructive criticism. Today, we’re doing a happy dance, because of this one:
The best app ever! Thank you for all your time and effort. It helped out in finding things to do without wasting precious vacation time. Cheers to you!!
Of course, the universe has a way of always popping your big egotistical balloon head, doesn’t it? For example:
I live in Rehoboth and this app is very sparce [sic] in it’s [sic] listings.
Thanks for letting us know what you think. For better or worse

Have you picked up the July issue of Washingtonian magazine yet?
You might spot yourself meandering the boardwalk in this photo, taken from the top of the Sands hotel.
And in tiny mouse type to the left? The name of the photographer: Rick Collier! Co-author of this website and the Rehoboth in My Pocket iPhone travel app!
How about heading toward the Blue Ridge? That’s what we’re doing, now that we’ve kicked off our “150 Wineries in 150 Days: Virginia” tour!
We tasted Cab Francs, Nortons, Viogniers and some varietals we could barely pronounce last weekend at Potomac Point, Paradise Springs, Sunset Hills, and Loudoun Valley Vineyards. (You try saying Rkatsiteli after you’ve tasted a dozen or so. Though in truth, we haven’t yet encountered the mysterious Rkatsiteli. Maybe this weekend in Culpeper!)
We truly do looove the beach, but there’s a lot to be said for cruising Virginia’s verdant hillsides, in search of wine. Follow us here, or, if you prefer crowds, here. Short attention span? Try this. This tour will take a while, and we’d love the company.

It’s time for ”No iPhone Friday“ - for those of us who can’t download the Rehoboth in My Pocket iPhone app/travel guide. This one’s for you. (Next year, though, I want to see you with an iPhone. K? Never mind all this hullaballoo about the newest one being bug ridden – you know you want one, and you know Apple is the coolest kid on the playground…)
What better to feature this hot, hot month than…ice cream!!
Royal Treat: Just Forget We Told You
You’d never notice the Royal Treat if you didn’t know it was there, sitting just a half block off the boardwalk in the middle of houses and apartment buildings. And I kind of hate to mention it, because now that I’m telling you about it, I just know you’re going to be the guy who grabs that last table for four on the screened porch, making me wait while I watch you scarf up that thick French toast, savor the maple-y ham, and then linger over coffee with this week’s Beachcomber.
So now I’ll have to get up even earlier, because Royal Treat closes down at 11:30 (only to reopen at 1:00 as an old-fashioned ice cream parlor) and there’s almost always a line as the late-comers try to squeeze their way in at 10:30 or 11. Like me, you won’t want to sit in the air conditioned back room – why would you, when you can sit on the porch with the ceiling fans? – so you’ll wait your turn, watch the clock, and keep your fingers crossed that they don’t close the doors on you.
Sometimes the owner’s medium-sized gold dog is there on the steps, so you occupy yourself by giving him a nice scratch (the owner has told you the dog’s breed a dozen times and still you can’t remember, but you don’t really care because even though the dog is sweet, it never acknowledges your existence).
A basic breakfast menu, a basic screened porch, basic friendly people serving you basic great food – there’s nothing exotic here, not at all. It’s probably not even worth going out of your way for. But if you must go, go early, would you?
4 Wilmington Avenue, Rehoboth Beach
Breakfast from 8 – 11:30 am, Ice cream from 1-11:30 pm
CASH ONLY!
Wow – just noticed I never even mentioned ice cream in this whole post – got so carried away with the French toast. But there IS ice cream and it IS fabulous – my favorite is a single scoop sundae with coconut chocolate almond ice cream (something like that, anyway), bunch of whipped cream, dark chocolate fudge, cherry and wet nuts. The nuts make this, and nobody does wet nuts any more! So get on over there before they change their mind.
